An Impact Proof Ionic Thruster Inspired By Nature (BTC Mark 3)
Let this ionic thruster turn some gears, and let my sponsor betterhelp connect you to a therapist who can support you - all from the comfort of your own home. Visit betterhelp.com/plasma or choose PlasmaChannel during signup, and enjoy a special discount on your first month of support.
Perhaps a sequential ionic thrust topology is not the way to go. It makes the most sense, but in reality results in dimishing returns. In this video - I explore the possibility of a peripheral approach to ionic thrust, using triconvergent air, and build it into a thruster which is impact proof.

I love that part of the design change is you've moved from 'how fast can we push air' to the more important question 'how much air can we push'.

You know those experiments where an arc to a toroidal magnet rotates around the magnet? I wonder if making an ironic thruster doing something like that would have a benefit. Maybe having it arc from one toroidal magnet to another to form an hourglass shape will result in more airflow due to the Bernoulli effect. Maybe it would also effectively create a larger area of plasma for more thrust than the single points with nearly 1 dimensional arcs of plasma.

the triangle shape also allows for a lot more a steerable thrust as well. more voltage on 2 sides vs 1 should direct air flow directions. it also seems like it would benefit from being able to adjust the gaps at run time. like say adjustment threads using a non conductive metal. since it looked like voltage / gap = trust able to adjust more variables during runtime should help with experimentation time. and might uncover extremes that weren't expected.

What if you attempted changing the angle on each segment so that instead of the air from each segment joining with itself. The air from all the segments join together all at the end.

So many questions, please answer some! What would happen with the triangle shape if you rotated each section 60°? What would happen if you combined 6 of the triangle shapes into a hexagon? What would happen if you made the whole thing a hexagon shape? Question about 3d printing in general, why don’t people print 3D molds that you could pour plastic in instead of waiting the long times for the 3d printing process to finish?

I love your experiments. Was just thinking what if you have only one air flow intake and one airflow exhaust? Meaning close all the sides that are open? Perhaps cling film wrapped around the device? But having only the intake and exit open but sides closed? And the "exhaust " perhaps a 3rd the size of the intake?🙌🦾 keep up the good work

Random question from a layperson with a game-design-related interest in real-world space drive technologies. Why must this design use straight lines (and thus be geometric, such as this triangular drive) instead of making a thruster that's circular? If you aren't getting the constructive interference you expect, it may be because the airflow from the edges of the triangle are closer to the center than the corners, and converge in a different place, causing turbulence. Another thought - instead of recording it blowing dry ice fog, record it sucking dry ice fog, including at lower power. This may show you where turbulence occurs, and let you hone in on designs with smoother airflow. Last thought - rather than measuring air volume and air velocity, measure thrust. You're making a thruster, the only useful metric of efficiency for a thruster is thrust.

The "diminishing returns" in adding stages may not be diminishing returns. I'm thinking, kinetic energy is m * v-squared. So, the 50% speed increment of the second stage represents 2.25 times the energy; and so on. If I'm right, the second stage transfers more power than the first. The problem is that what benefits propulsion is momentum, rather than kinetic energy of the exhaust.

Nice small module! But - sorry to say - from an engineers point of view: the good part stops there. From building a thruster but not measuring the thrust (Thrust/Watt? Thrust/Weight? Efficiency?) to ignoring Bernoullis law ... only measuring the airspeed for efficiency plus not realizing the connection to kinetic energy is strange. And how about making protokols? You did enough in the Gym, now get your science in shape. Please. You definitely could use some help.

I think having the stages that close isn't allowing the streams from each stage to converge before hitting the turbulence from the next stages. May want to try spacing them farther apart, but with shielding to prevent more air coming in, but have SOME air input to prevent a low pressure / vacuum area formation between stages. That would allow each stage to fully converge before being added to or even wrapped with the next stage column. As I was typing this, I also thought that, if you alter the angles of each stage, you may get coaxial flow where the stages can "wrap" the column of the previous and allow for, maybe not more velocity, but more total mass flow, resulting in more overall power output. You can't totally think of the velocity alone, but how much air is being moved at said velocity. 2m/s for 3 L/s is going to be more power than 4m/s for 1L/s. You simply have more kinetic energy being output. Air is approx 1.2g/L, so for the above you would have 60mN vs vs 47mN, respectively.

Cool video, cool concept. Seeing the improvements from the MK. I thruster is pretty impressive. That being said, at the risk of sounding entitled, I do hope that you consider dropping BetterHelp as a sponsor until they change their ways and their rather disingenuous tactics regarding both patients privacy and safety, and their hiring of qualified professionals. Many comments, although I do agree that some are and can be harsh or out there, do generally agree that the company is simply harming the individuals it’s claiming to help. All in all, I only wish for the channel to grow and succeed, and that this project evolves to one day having a rather successful ionic thruster/wing.

Question, would increasing the flow on the direct outside make it better, as it would have more air to redirect? With it being on a wing, the increase flow outside would be present past initial start up? Or would this be a non factor?

Very interesting !! With electromagnetic thrusters, the power is pulsed, and the transit time from stage to stage is factored into the pulse timing to ensure synchronicity from thrust / impulse stage to thrust/ impulse stage. In a less dynamic engine, your thrust is a continuously powered device with static / fixed power applied for the continuous thrust model. Would pulsed HV control show a dynamic and interactive thrust based on ion charge and ionized air transit time from stage to stage? Just curiosity at this point, as I am totally unaware of the aerodynamic properties involved in continuous ionic thrust models and my old TI calculator would have a hemorrhage trying to compute the static and dynamic interactions. Your models have shown great promise which does, indicate the voltage source is quite important as shown with the single supply air velocity measurements versus multiple power source models, and the intricacies of drag combined with element spacing. This is just the maundering of an old fart trying to grasp the static -vs- dynamic interactions as envisioned by thoughts on antiquated ducted fan experiments. Good Luck and smooth air transitions !!! Best wishes and may the principles of Heisenberg and Murphy's Law avoid your Lab !!!
